The Eames Chair -- So Important It's In A Museum!

Considered one of the most significant and widely recognized furniture designs of the 20th century, the Charles Eames Lounge Chair set a standard for comfort and elegance in modern design. The chair is so important in modern furniture design that it has become a part of the permanent collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art.

The rich veneer and supple leather suggest old-fashioned luxury translated into modern forms. Charles Eames said his goal for the chair was the "warm, receptive look of a well-used first baseman's mitt." The hand assembled is also environmentally sound; the wood is harvested exclusively from sustainably managed forests. 

Introduced in 1956, it's a treasured collector's item around the world. Marking its 50th anniversary, Herman Miller has introduced a 50th Anniversary Special Edition Commemorative mark. All chairs ordered during 2006 feature a medallion affixed to the bottom.

When I was growing up, we had one of these chairs in my house. It was my dad's reading chair. If I close my eyes, I can picture him in it reading the paper and smoking a cigar. My brother has since inherited what has now become a family heirloom of sorts.
